Gufram & Snarkitecture Present 'The Sculpted Series' Furniture Collection
Milan Design Week 2023: Gufram and Snarkitecture, the New York design studio founded by Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen, are proud to present THE SCULPTED SERIES, Gufram's solution for total living.
Radical and monumental, the new collection is a family of five domestic sculptures available only in black or white: a bookcase, a mobile bar, an armchair, a coffee table and a side table.
Like all Gufram products, each piece in the series is handcrafted by skilled craftsmen, starting from a block of polyurethane foam to obtain a concrete-like texture. The sculpted pieces are then coated with Guflac Ultra, the evolution of Guflac, the special varnish invented by Gufram over 50 years ago, which makes each piece incredibly durable and resistant to atmospheric agents. Guflac Ultra is applied entirely by hand, allowing the polyurethane to maintain its elasticity and softness, thus opening the door to new aesthetic experiments.
The meeting between the Italian design brand and the founders of the American studio dates back to 2016, when their first collaboration, the Broken Mirror, was presented. The Broken Series, an extension of the original partnership launched in 2017, features shapes and silhouettes that are both familiar and unusual - an architectural fragment that reflects the shared sensibility of Gufram and Snarkitecture.
“We love collaborating with Gufram. Their approach, craftsmanship and sensibility make Gufram feel like a distant and much loved relative to Snarkitecture. For the Sculpted Series we wanted to create objects that people could both live with and work with, with a range of different designs and purposes. The pieces appear solid, about to be unearthed, yet reveal themselves as soft shapes – a playful surprise in everyday life." - explains Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen, founders of Snarkitecture.
THE SCULPTED SERIES will make its debut with a site specific installation at Capsule Plaza inside Spazio Maiocchi from 17 to 23 April 2023.
